Teeth Whitening in Prestons
A brighter smile, planned and supervised by a dentist
Professional Teeth Whitening at Star Light Dental
Years of Coffee, Tea and Red Wine? Whitening Can Lift It
Teeth darken with age and with everything we eat and drink. Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel to break down the stains inside the enamel, which is something whitening toothpaste cannot do. It does not drill, thin or damage the tooth, and for most people it is the simplest way to freshen a smile.
At Star Light Dental in Prestons, whitening always starts with a check of your teeth and gums. That matters more than it sounds: whitening over untreated decay or leaking fillings hurts, and whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings, so you should know what result to expect before you pay for it.
Is Teeth Whitening Right for You?
- Yellow or dull teeth from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking
- Teeth that have darkened with age
- A wedding, graduation or job interview coming up
- You have finished braces or aligners and want the final polish
- Healthy teeth and gums, or you are happy to have any problems treated first
Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, or over untreated decay or gum disease. Grey staining from old injuries or some medications responds less well, and in those cases we will talk to you about veneers or bonding instead.
Dentist Whitening vs Shop-Bought Kits
Why the Strength and the Check-Up Matter
- Strength. In Australia, whitening products stronger than 6% hydrogen peroxide (18% carbamide peroxide) can only be supplied and used by a registered dental practitioner. Shop, salon and online kits have to stay below that, which is why their results are limited.
- Fit. Dentist-made trays are moulded to your teeth, so the gel stays on the enamel and off the gums. One-size trays and strips leak, which causes sore gums and patchy results.
- Safety. A dentist checks for decay, cracks, exposed roots and gum problems first, and protects the gums during treatment.
A professional scale and clean beforehand removes surface staining and tartar, so the whitening gel works evenly on clean enamel.
How Professional Whitening Works
What to Expect, Step by Step
- Check-up and shade. We examine your teeth and gums, record your starting shade and explain the result you can realistically expect.
- Choosing the method. Professional whitening can be done in the chair in about an hour, at home with custom-made trays over one to two weeks, or as a combination. We recommend the approach that suits your teeth, your timeline and your budget.
- Whitening. In the chair, your gums are protected and the gel is applied in short cycles. At home, you wear your trays with a small amount of gel for the time we advise.
- Sensitivity care. Some sensitivity for a day or two is common and temporary. We show you how to manage it and can adjust the gel strength if needed.
- Keeping it white. Results typically last from several months to a few years depending on your habits. Occasional top-ups with your trays keep the shade.
Teeth Whitening Costs and Payment Plans
Clear Costs Before You Start
The cost depends on the method you choose. You are given the price before you decide, and there is no obligation after the check-up.
- Whitening is a cosmetic treatment, so most health funds do not pay a rebate for it. The check-up and clean beforehand usually are covered.
- Afterpay and Medipay are available if you would rather spread the cost. See how dental payment plans work.
- To protect the result, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking for the first 48 hours, then rinse with water after dark drinks.
Other Ways to Improve Your Smile
When Whitening Alone Is Not Enough
Whitening changes colour, not shape or position. If you also want to fix chips, gaps or crooked teeth, these are the usual next steps:
- Porcelain veneers and smile makeovers
- Invisalign and braces to straighten teeth first
- Crowns and bridges for damaged or missing teeth
- Scale and clean to remove surface stains
Not sure if whitening will work on your teeth? Book a check-up and we will tell you honestly.
