Teeth Straightening at Star Light Dental

Crooked, Crowded or Gappy Teeth? There Is More Than One Way to Straighten Them

Straight teeth are easier to clean, kinder to your bite and, for most people, a real boost in confidence. At Star Light Dental in Prestons we offer Invisalign and other clear aligners as well as traditional braces, for teenagers and adults. Because we offer both, the advice you get is about what suits your teeth and your lifestyle, not about selling one system.

Every case starts with a proper assessment. Many people are good candidates for clear aligners, some are better served by braces, and if your case needs a specialist orthodontist we will tell you and arrange the referral.

Is Teeth Straightening Right for You?

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth that are hard to clean
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that have drifted back after braces years ago
  • A mild to moderate overbite, underbite or crossbite
  • Adults who want straighter teeth without visible braces
  • Teenagers whose adult teeth have all come through

Healthy gums come first. Any decay or gum disease is treated before teeth are moved, because moving teeth through inflamed gums does more harm than good. It is never too late: a large share of aligner patients are adults.

Clear Aligners or Braces?

An Honest Comparison

  • Clear aligners (such as Invisalign). A series of thin, clear, removable trays that move teeth a little at a time. Nearly invisible, taken out to eat and brush, and worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Best for mild to moderate crowding and spacing, and they only work if you wear them.
  • Braces. Fixed to the teeth, so they work around the clock with nothing to remember. Often the better tool for more complex movements, severe crowding and bite correction.
  • Retainers. Whichever you choose, teeth try to drift back. A retainer afterwards is what keeps the result, and it is part of the plan from day one.

We will show you which option suits your case and why, including how long each is likely to take and what each costs.

How Treatment Works

From First Visit to Retainer

  1. Consultation and records. We examine your teeth, gums and bite and take the photos, X-rays and impressions or scans needed to plan the movement.
  2. Your plan and quote. You see the proposed plan, the expected timeframe and the full cost in writing before you commit to anything.
  3. Fitting. Aligners are fitted with small tooth-coloured attachments where needed and you are shown how to wear and clean them. Braces are bonded in a single longer visit.
  4. Regular reviews. Short check-ups every six to eight weeks keep things on track: new aligner sets, or adjustments to the braces.
  5. Retainers. When the teeth are where they should be, retainers hold them there.

Simple cases can finish in around six months. Most take 12 to 18 months, and complex cases longer. You will be given a realistic estimate at the start.

Invisalign and Braces Costs, Health Funds and Payment Plans

A Written Quote Before You Commit

The cost depends on how far the teeth need to move, how long treatment takes and which system is used, so we quote after the assessment, not over the phone.

  • Health funds that include orthodontic cover usually pay towards aligners and braces, up to a lifetime limit and after a waiting period. We give you the item numbers so you can check your benefit before you start.
  • Medipay and Afterpay payment plans spread the cost across the length of treatment. See how dental payment plans work.
  • Retainers and review visits are itemised in the quote so there are no surprises later.

Other Ways to Improve Your Smile

Straightening Is Often One Part of the Plan

Aligners and braces move teeth. They do not change their colour or shape. These treatments are often combined with straightening, or chosen instead of it:
