Dental Payment Plans Explained: Afterpay, Medipay and Spreading the Cost of Treatment

dental treatment blog

Cost is the number one reason Australians put off going to the dentist. The trouble is that dental problems do not wait. A small filling left for a year can become a root canal and crown, and the bill grows with it.

Payment plans exist to break that cycle by letting you have treatment when you need it and pay for it over time. They are useful, but they are still a form of credit, so it pays to understand how they work.

1. How Dental Payment Plans Work

Instead of paying the whole amount on the day, you pay in instalments to a third-party provider, which pays the clinic. You apply online or at reception, approval usually takes a few minutes, and treatment can go ahead straight away. Star Light Dental offers two options: Afterpay and Medipay.

2. Afterpay at the Dentist

Afterpay splits a bill into four equal payments, one on the day and the rest every two weeks. There is no interest, but late fees apply if a payment is missed, and your spending limit depends on your account history. It suits smaller amounts: a check-up and clean for the family, a filling or two, or the gap left after your health fund has paid its share.

3. Medipay for Larger Treatment

Medipay is a payment plan provider set up specifically for health care. It is designed for larger treatment plans, such as crowns, dentures, wisdom teeth removal or cosmetic work, and allows repayment over a longer period than Afterpay. Approval criteria, fees and terms are set by the provider, so read them carefully before you accept. Reception can show you how to apply.

4. What to Check Before You Sign Up

  • the total you will repay, including any establishment, account-keeping or late fees
  • the size and frequency of the repayments, and whether they fit comfortably in your budget
  • what happens if you miss a payment
  • whether the plan will show up on your credit file
  • whether you can pay it off early without a penalty

A payment plan should make a necessary treatment manageable. It should not push you into something you cannot afford. If you are unsure, take the written quote home and think about it.

5. Other Ways to Bring the Cost Down

  • Health fund extras. We accept all health funds and claim on the spot, so a payment plan only ever needs to cover the gap. See how to get more from your dental cover.
  • The Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Up to $1,158 per eligible child over two calendar years. See our CDBS guide.
  • NSW dental vouchers for concession card holders. See how vouchers work.
  • Staging treatment. Where it is clinically sensible, we can deal with the urgent problems first and spread the rest over time, and across two health fund years.

6. The Cheapest Dentistry Is Early Dentistry

Nearly every expensive dental treatment started as a cheap one that was put off. A six-monthly check-up and clean costs a fraction of the fillings, root canals and crowns it prevents. If it has been a few years, do not let embarrassment or worry about the bill keep you away. We will tell you what is urgent, what can wait and what each option costs, in writing, before anything starts.
