Crowns and Bridges at Star Light Dental

Cracked, Heavily Filled or Missing Teeth? We Can Rebuild Them

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth by joining a replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. Both are fixed in place, so you brush and eat as normal, and both are made to match the colour of your own teeth.

Crowns and bridges are part of prosthodontics, the area of dentistry in which Dr Maher Farag holds a Post-Graduate Diploma. With 34 years of experience, it is work he knows well.

When a Crown Is the Right Choice

  • A tooth with a large filling and not much natural tooth left
  • A cracked tooth, or one that hurts when you bite down
  • A back tooth that has had root canal treatment
  • A broken or badly worn tooth
  • A discoloured or misshapen tooth that whitening cannot fix
  • To sit on top of a dental implant

A filling patches a hole. A crown holds the whole tooth together. When more than about half of a tooth is filling, a crown is usually the longer-lasting repair.

Types of Dental Crowns and Bridges

Matched to the Tooth and the Job

  • Porcelain and ceramic crowns. The most natural looking, and the usual choice for front teeth.
  • Zirconia crowns. Very strong and tooth-coloured, well suited to back teeth and to people who grind.
  • Porcelain fused to metal. A metal core for strength with porcelain over the top.
  • Gold alloy crowns. Less common now, but kind to the opposing teeth and very long lasting on back molars.
  • Fixed bridges. One or more replacement teeth held by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap.

We recommend a material based on where the tooth is, how heavily you bite and how visible it is when you smile.

How a Crown or Bridge Is Made

Usually Two Visits, a Couple of Weeks Apart

  1. Assessment. We check the tooth and its roots with an X-ray, talk through the options and give you a written quote.
  2. Preparing the tooth. Under local anaesthetic the tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown. For a bridge, the teeth either side of the gap are prepared in the same way.
  3. Impressions and shade. We take an impression or scan and match the colour to your other teeth. The crown or bridge is then made by a dental laboratory.
  4. Temporary crown. You leave with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the final one is made.
  5. Fitting. At the second visit we check the fit, the bite and the colour, then cement it in place.

With good brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges commonly last ten to fifteen years or more.

Crown and Bridge Costs, Health Funds and Payment Plans

Clear Costs Before Any Treatment

The cost depends on the material, the tooth and, for a bridge, how many teeth are involved. You receive a written quote with the item numbers, so you can check your rebate with your health fund before going ahead.

  • Most health funds pay a rebate for crowns and bridges under major dental. We claim on the spot, so you only pay the gap.
  • Medipay and Afterpay payment plans let you spread the cost. See how dental payment plans work.
  • A bridge is not the only way to fill a gap. We will also quote a dental implant or a partial denture so you can compare.
