Children’s Dentist in Prestons
Gentle, unhurried dental visits for kids, with CDBS accepted
Children’s Dentistry at Star Light Dental
A Calm First Visit Sets Kids Up for Life
Children who have good early experiences at the dentist grow into adults who are not afraid of one. At Star Light Dental in Prestons we keep kids’ visits short, friendly and unhurried. We show them the chair, count their teeth and explain everything in words they understand before we do anything.
Families come to us from Prestons, Carnes Hill, Hoxton Park, Casula, Edmondson Park and Liverpool. We are open Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, so a check-up does not have to mean time off school.
When Should My Child First See the Dentist?
The Australian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth comes through, or by your child’s first birthday. After that, most children should be seen every six to twelve months.
- Baby teeth hold the space for adult teeth and help with chewing and speech.
- Decay in baby teeth can be painful and can spread to the adult teeth underneath.
- Early visits let us spot crowding, thumb-sucking effects and weak enamel before they cause trouble.
- Regular, easy visits build a habit that lasts into adulthood.
What Is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
Medicare-Funded Dental Care for Eligible Kids
The CDBS is a Medicare program that helps pay for basic dental care for eligible children aged 0 to 17. Eligibility depends on your family receiving certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. The benefit is capped over two calendar years and covers services such as check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals and extractions. It does not cover orthodontics, cosmetic work or treatment in hospital.
Star Light Dental is a CDBS provider. Bring your child’s Medicare card and we will check their eligibility and remaining balance before any treatment, and explain any costs up front. We also accept all health funds and NSW government dental vouchers.
Common Children’s Dental Treatments
Prevention First, Treatment When Needed
- Check-ups and cleans to catch problems while they are small.
- Fissure sealants, a thin protective coating over the deep grooves of the back teeth, where most childhood decay starts.
- Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel.
- Tooth-coloured fillings for baby and adult teeth.
- Extractions when a tooth cannot be saved or is blocking an adult tooth.
- Advice for parents on brushing, diet, dummies and thumb sucking, and when to think about orthodontics.
Helping Nervous Kids Feel Safe
Patience, Not Pressure
Dr Liza Mekhael has a special focus on children’s dentistry and on helping anxious patients feel at ease. We explain first, show second and only then do, we let parents stay in the room, and we never rush a child who needs a moment.
If your child needs more complex treatment and cannot cope in the chair, we will talk you through the options, including referral to a specialist paediatric dentist where that is the kinder choice.
