Missing a Tooth? Replace It With Something That Stays Put
A dental implant is a small titanium post that takes the place of a missing tooth root. Once the bone has healed around it, a custom-made crown, bridge or denture is attached on top, so the new tooth looks, feels and chews much like a natural one. Unlike a bridge, an implant does not rely on the teeth next to it. Unlike a loose denture, it does not move when you eat or talk.
At Star Light Dental in Prestons, every implant case starts with a careful assessment and a plain-English explanation of your options. Dr Maher Farag holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Prosthodontics, the area of dentistry that deals with replacing and restoring teeth, and has 34 years of experience.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
- You have one or more missing teeth, or a tooth that cannot be saved
- You want a fixed tooth rather than a removable denture
- Your denture moves or rubs and you want it held firmly in place
- You would rather not have healthy neighbouring teeth cut down for a bridge
- Your gums are healthy, or gum disease has been treated first
- You are an adult whose jaw has finished growing
Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications can slow healing and affect how long an implant lasts. We go through your medical history at the consultation and will tell you honestly if another option suits you better.
What Can Dental Implants Replace?
One Tooth, Several Teeth or a Full Arch
- A single tooth. One implant with a crown on top. The teeth either side are left untouched.
- Several teeth in a row. Two implants can support a bridge of three or four teeth, so you do not need an implant for every gap.
- A full set of teeth. A small number of implants can hold a full denture firmly in place, which stops the slipping and sore spots many denture wearers put up with. See our dentures in Prestons page for how the two work together.
Replacing a missing tooth is not only about looks. A gap lets the neighbouring teeth drift and tilt, and the bone in that area slowly shrinks once it no longer has a root to support. An implant is the only replacement that puts something back into the bone.
The Dental Implant Process, Step by Step
No Surprises, From First Visit to Final Tooth
- Consultation and scans. We examine your teeth and gums, arrange the X-rays and scans needed to measure the bone, and talk through your options and the full cost before you decide anything.
- Placing the implant. The implant is placed in the jaw under local anaesthetic. The area is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. If you are anxious, sedation is available.
- Healing. Over the next three to six months the bone grows onto the implant and locks it in place. A temporary tooth can often fill the gap while you wait.
- Fitting the tooth. Once the implant is solid, we take impressions and fit a crown, bridge or denture made to match your other teeth.
- Looking after it. Implants cannot decay, but the gum around them can still become infected, so brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups matter just as much as before.
If extra steps are needed first, such as removing a damaged tooth or building up the bone, or if your case is better managed with a specialist, we will explain why and arrange it.
Dental Implant Costs and Payment Plans
A Written Quote Before You Commit
The cost of an implant depends on how many teeth are being replaced, whether any bone or gum work is needed first, and the type of tooth that goes on top. That is why we do not quote a price over the phone. After your consultation you receive a written treatment plan with every cost itemised.
- Health funds with major dental cover usually pay a rebate towards implants and crowns. We claim on the spot, so you only pay the gap.
- Medipay and Afterpay payment plans let you spread the cost over time. See how dental payment plans work.
- A bridge or a partial denture costs less up front. We will quote those as well so you can weigh them up.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Other Ways to Replace Missing Teeth
If an Implant Is Not the Right Fit
Implants are not the only answer, and they are not right for everyone. Depending on the gap, your bite and your budget, one of these may suit you better:
