Pregnancy and Dental Care: What Is Safe and What to Watch For

preventative dent blog

Somewhere between the first scan and the nursery furniture, many women are told to steer clear of the dentist until the baby arrives. The opposite is true. Dental care during pregnancy is safe, it is recommended, and pregnancy itself changes your mouth in ways that make a check-up more useful than usual.

Here is what to expect, what is safe and what can wait.

1. Is It Safe to See the Dentist While Pregnant?

Yes. Check-ups, cleans, fillings and local anaesthetic are all considered safe during pregnancy, and leaving an infection untreated is a far greater risk than treating it. Always tell us that you are pregnant, how far along you are and what medications or supplements you are taking, so that we can plan around it.

The ideal time to see the dentist is actually before you conceive. If that ship has sailed, book early in the pregnancy.

2. The Best Time for Treatment

Routine treatment is most comfortable in the second trimester, from about week 14 to week 27. Morning sickness has usually settled, and lying back in the chair is still comfortable. In the third trimester, long appointments on your back can be unpleasant, so we keep visits short and adjust your position.

Emergencies are different. Pain, swelling or infection should be treated straight away at any stage.

3. Why Your Gums Bleed More

Pregnancy hormones make gums react more strongly to plaque. The result is pregnancy gingivitis: red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush. It is very common and usually appears in the second trimester.

The answer is to brush and floss more carefully, not less, and to have a professional scale and clean. Some women also develop a small, harmless lump on the gum known as a pregnancy epulis, which normally shrinks after the birth. Research has linked severe gum disease with premature birth and low birth weight. It has not been proven to cause them, but it is one more reason to keep your gums healthy.

4. Morning Sickness and Your Teeth

Stomach acid softens enamel, and brushing straight after being sick scrubs that softened layer away.

  • Rinse with water, or with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a glass of water.
  • Wait 30 to 60 minutes before brushing.
  • If toothpaste makes you gag, try a milder flavour and a small-headed brush.
  • If you are snacking often to manage nausea, choose low-sugar options and rinse with water afterwards.

5. X-Rays, Anaesthetic and What Can Wait

  • X-rays. Routine X-rays are usually postponed until after the birth. If one is genuinely needed to diagnose pain or infection, modern dental X-rays use a very low dose and can be taken safely with shielding.
  • Local anaesthetic. Safe. There is no need to sit through treatment in pain.
  • Cosmetic treatment. Teeth whitening and other elective cosmetic work are best left until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Medication. We choose medicines that are appropriate in pregnancy and will check with your GP or obstetrician when needed.

6. After the Baby Arrives

Sleep deprivation is hard on teeth, because brushing gets skipped and snacking goes up. Keep your own check-ups going. The bacteria that cause decay can be passed from parent to baby through shared spoons or by cleaning a dummy in your own mouth, so a healthy mouth for you gives your baby a better start. Your child’s own first visit is due when the first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Our children’s dentistry page explains what to expect.
