What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
If you are not sure whether it can wait, call us and describe what is happening. As a guide, these problems should be seen the same day:
- Severe or throbbing toothache that keeps you awake or does not settle with pain relief.
- A knocked-out tooth. An adult tooth put back within about an hour has the best chance of surviving.
- A broken, cracked or chipped tooth, especially if it is sharp, painful or sensitive to air and cold.
- Swelling or an abscess in the gum or face. This is an infection and will not clear up by itself.
- A lost filling or crown. Keep the crown if you have it, as it can often be re-cemented.
- Bleeding or a cut to the gums, lips, cheek or tongue that will not stop.
What to Do Before You Get Here
First Aid for Common Dental Emergencies
- Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Do not scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk or inside your cheek and come straight in. Never put a baby tooth back in.
- Toothache: rinse with warm salty water and take your usual pain relief as directed on the pack. Do not place aspirin on the gum, as it burns the tissue.
- Broken tooth: keep any pieces, rinse your mouth and avoid chewing on that side.
- Swelling: hold a cold pack against your cheek, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.
- Bleeding: press firmly with clean gauze or a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes without lifting it to check.
When to Go to Hospital Instead
Some Emergencies Need a Hospital, Not a Dentist
Go to a hospital emergency department or call 000 if swelling is spreading towards your eye or neck, if you are having trouble breathing or swallowing, if bleeding will not stop, or after a serious blow to the head or jaw. Liverpool Hospital has the nearest emergency department to Prestons.
If it happens after hours or on a Sunday and none of those apply, follow the first-aid steps above and call us as soon as we open. We are open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm.
What Happens at Your Emergency Visit
Out of Pain First, Then a Plan
We work out what is causing the problem, usually with an X-ray, and get you comfortable first. Where we can, we fix it on the day. If the tooth needs more work, such as a root canal or a crown, we explain your options and the costs before anything further is done.
After the Emergency
Fixing the Cause So It Does Not Come Back
Once you are out of pain, the tooth may need follow-up treatment so the problem does not return. Depending on the cause, that might be:
- Dental fillings for decay or a lost filling
- Wisdom teeth removal for pain at the back of the jaw
- Gum disease treatment for swollen or bleeding gums
- Dentures and other options if a tooth cannot be saved
- Root canal treatment to clear an infected tooth and keep it
- Dental crowns and bridges to rebuild a broken tooth
Not sure what you need? Call (02) 9432 2833 and we will point you in the right direction.
