Dental Fillings in Prestons
Tooth-coloured fillings that repair decay, chips and small gaps
Dental Fillings at Star Light Dental
Fix a Cavity Early, Before It Becomes a Bigger Problem
A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay, a chip or wear. We remove the decayed part, clean the area and rebuild the tooth so you can bite and chew normally again. Caught early, a cavity is a quick, comfortable fix. Left alone, it keeps growing until the tooth needs a root canal, a crown or removal.
At Star Light Dental in Prestons we place fillings for patients from Liverpool, Casula, Hoxton Park and Carnes Hill, including children and people who are nervous about the dentist.
Signs You May Need a Filling
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food and drinks
- Pain when you bite down
- A visible hole, dark spot or rough edge on a tooth
- Food catching in the same spot every time
- Floss that shreds between two teeth
- A filling that has chipped, cracked or fallen out
Small cavities often cause no pain at all, which is why we look for them at every check-up.
What Types of Fillings Are There?
The Right Material for the Tooth
Modern fillings are usually made from tooth-coloured composite resin. It is matched to the shade of your tooth, bonds directly to the enamel and lets us keep more of the healthy tooth. For bigger repairs there are other options:
- Glass ionomer, often used for children and near the gumline, which slowly releases fluoride.
- Porcelain inlays and onlays, made to fit when a tooth is too damaged for a standard filling but does not need a full crown.
- Crowns, when very little healthy tooth is left.
We recommend the material that suits the tooth, how hard you bite and your budget, and we explain why.
Closing Small Gaps Between Teeth
Teeth Gap Filling With Composite Bonding
The same tooth-coloured material can be used to close a small gap between teeth, often called teeth gap filling or composite bonding. The resin is shaped and polished directly on the tooth, usually in one visit and often without drilling or injections.
Bonding suits small, even gaps and chipped edges. For larger gaps or crowded teeth, veneers or clear aligners may give a better result, and we will tell you honestly which option fits.
What Happens When You Get a Filling?
A Comfortable Visit, Usually Under an Hour
- We numb the tooth so you stay comfortable.
- The decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned.
- The filling is placed in layers, set with a curing light, then shaped and polished so your bite feels normal.
You can eat once the numbness wears off. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal. Call us if the tooth feels high when you bite, as a quick adjustment fixes it.
Other Options Available
When a Filling Is Not Enough
If decay has reached the nerve, or the tooth has broken badly, a filling alone will not last. Depending on what we find, we may talk to you about:
- Emergency dental care for a broken tooth or severe toothache
- Cosmetic dentistry, including veneers, for worn or chipped front teeth
- Dentures and implant options if a tooth cannot be saved
- A regular scale and clean to stop new cavities forming
The best way to avoid fillings is a regular check-up and clean, where we catch decay while it is still small.
