Veneers vs Bonding vs Crowns: Which One Does Your Smile Need?

Chipped, stained, gappy, worn or uneven front teeth can all be fixed. The question is how. Bonding, veneers and crowns can each transform a smile, but they differ enormously in how much natural tooth they remove, how long they last and what they cost.
The guiding principle is simple: choose the most conservative option that will do the job. Here is how the three compare.
1. Start with the Simplest Fix
If colour is the only thing you dislike, the answer is usually professional whitening, which removes no tooth at all. If the teeth are crooked rather than misshapen, aligners may be the better path. Veneers placed over crowded teeth mean cutting away healthy enamel to fake a straightness that orthodontics would achieve for real. A good cosmetic plan often combines whitening or alignment first with a small amount of bonding afterwards.
2. Composite Bonding
Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto the tooth, shaped, hardened with a light and polished.
- Best for: chips, small gaps, worn edges and minor changes of shape.
- For: usually one visit, little or no drilling, often no injection, the lowest cost, and easy to repair.
- Against: it picks up stain over time, chips more easily than porcelain, and typically lasts four to eight years before it needs refreshing.
3. Porcelain Veneers
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain, custom made in a laboratory and bonded to the front of the tooth.
- Best for: teeth that are permanently discoloured, worn, uneven or slightly out of line, and for changing several front teeth at once.
- For: the most natural, lifelike result, highly resistant to stain, and a lifespan of commonly 10 to 15 years or more.
- Against: a thin layer of enamel is usually removed, so it is not reversible. It takes two or three visits and costs more per tooth.
4. Crowns
A crown covers the whole tooth like a cap. It is a restorative treatment first and a cosmetic one second.
- Best for: teeth that are structurally weak, such as those with very large fillings, cracks, heavy wear or root canal treatment.
- For: it holds a compromised tooth together and can look excellent.
- Against: it removes the most tooth of the three, so it is the wrong choice for a healthy tooth that only needs to look better.
5. Side by Side
- Tooth removed: bonding little or none, veneers a thin layer, crowns the most.
- Visits: bonding one, veneers and crowns two or three.
- How long it lasts: bonding four to eight years, veneers and crowns ten to fifteen years or more.
- Stain resistance: porcelain is excellent, composite is moderate.
- Cost: bonding lowest, veneers and crowns higher.
All three last longer in a healthy mouth. Gum disease, decay and night-time grinding need to be dealt with first.
