Replacing a Missing Tooth: Implant, Bridge or Denture?

Whether it was lost to decay, gum disease, a crack or a knock on the sports field, a missing tooth is more than a gap in your smile. Teeth work as a team, and when one goes the rest start to move.

There are three established ways to replace a tooth: a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. Each has real strengths and real drawbacks. Here is an honest comparison.

1. What Happens If You Leave the Gap?

  • The teeth on either side slowly tilt and drift into the space.
  • The opposing tooth, with nothing to bite against, grows further out of the gum.
  • The jawbone under the gap shrinks because it is no longer being used.
  • More chewing load falls on the remaining teeth, which wear or crack sooner.
  • Food trapping around the tilted teeth raises the risk of decay and gum disease.

These changes are slow, but they make replacement harder and more expensive the longer it is left. Not every gap has to be filled, though. A missing tooth at the very back sometimes causes no trouble at all, and we will tell you if that is the case.

2. Dental Implants

An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial root, with a crown fitted on top once it has healed.

  • For: it looks, feels and functions most like a natural tooth, it leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched, it helps preserve the bone, and with good care it can last for decades.
  • Against: it is the most expensive option up front, it involves minor surgery and several months of healing, and it needs enough healthy bone. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes reduce the success rate.

3. Dental Bridges

A bridge is a false tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. It is fixed, so it does not come out.

  • For: no surgery, finished in two or three visits, and a good choice when the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings and would benefit from crowns anyway.
  • Against: healthy neighbouring teeth have to be cut down to take the crowns, it does not stop the bone underneath shrinking, it needs special floss to clean beneath it, and it typically lasts 10 to 15 years.

4. Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable plate carrying one or more false teeth, held in by clasps around your natural teeth.

  • For: the most affordable option, the quickest to make, no drilling or surgery, and one denture can replace several teeth in different parts of the mouth.
  • Against: it has to be removed for cleaning and overnight, it is less stable when chewing, and it takes some getting used to.

Our guide to the types of dentures explains the acrylic, metal and flexible options.

5. How to Choose

  • Where the gap is. Front teeth are about appearance, back teeth about chewing force.
  • The state of the neighbouring teeth. Untouched neighbours favour an implant. Heavily filled neighbours can favour a bridge.
  • Bone and gum health. Gum disease has to be under control before any of the three.
  • Your general health and whether you smoke.
  • Time. A denture takes weeks, a bridge a few weeks, an implant several months.
  • Budget, both now and over the long term.

6. Cost and Cover

Replacing a tooth falls under major dental on most health fund extras policies, often with a twelve-month waiting period, so check your cover. Concession card holders may be eligible for an NSW denture voucher. We provide a written quote for each suitable option so you can compare them properly, and Medipay and Afterpay payment plans are available.
